Kansas Pond Series

Project Background Information

The images displayed in the Pond Series gallery are the result of a year long photographic study documenting the effects of light, season and weather on the same landscape.  This lovely Leavenworth County farm pond provided the canvas for some rapidly changing light to paint its magic for the lens.

To appreciate how rapidly light can change in the natural world, the After the Storm and Ominous Storm images were taken a mere twenty minutes apart and produce a dramatically different response from the unknowing viewer.  It would be nearly impossible to tell that these two images were captured on the same March evening within only twenty minutes of each other.  My Golden Reflection, Thanksgiving Moonrise and Winter Pinks were all captured within an hour of each other on November 23,  2004 after a late fall snowstorm swept through the area.

The accompanying images chronicle the seasonal shifts in foliage and light on the heartland landscape.  This photographic experience allowed me to gain an important insight into the effects of light on the landscape and enabled me to better anticipate those times when weather conditions and season combine to provide beautiful photographic opportunities.

I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to the owners of this beautiful pond for allowing me to spend many memorable moments capturing the ever changing light on their farm.
